The sizes and shape of snowflakes that reach the ground are the result of complex three dimensional fall paths and the cumulative results of differing microphysical processes in a constantly changing cloud environment. Snowflakes collected at the same time and place on the ground can be different sizes, crystal shapes, of different age, and have formed and grown in different parts of a storm.
